Fields of Gold

There's a QB competition brewing in Pittsburgh.

Welcome to Glass Slipper! It’s time to wake up, Simone Biles competes today; please enjoy the show.

Did you guys see the fight that broke out at Steelers training camp yesterday? Elandon Roberts popped Justin Fields after a play, and chaos ensued. When the dust settled, there was only one thing that was evident. This is really, really bad for Russell Wilson.

Training camp brawls are nothing new. Big, strong grown men competing for playing time and money in hot, sticky weather? Yeah, tempers are going to boil over sometimes. But this one was a little bit different. That’s an entire Pittsburgh offense stepping up to a two-time Super Bowl champion linebacker to protect a new quarterback that’s still on his rookie deal. To me, it was a clear signal of how much Fields has already endeared himself to this team. If Arik Armstead bumps Mac Jones after the whistle in Jacksonville tomorrow, I can guarantee you that the other Jaguars won’t be sprinting in to help their backup signal-caller.

Fields is an extraordinarily likable human. He also happens to be one of the five most exciting football players on the planet. That’s a dangerous combination for anyone sitting ahead of him on a depth chart. Remember when Andy Dalton started getting booed by Bears fans before Fields had even taken his first NFL snap? Russ is about to experience something similar if Steelers fans collectively decide that they want to see the electric kid more than the aging veteran.

I’ve always defended Wilson, and I will continue to do so. He causes zero drama outside of football, and I can count on one hand the number of active quarterbacks that have accomplished more than him. There are so many guys in the NFL that have given us - with their words and their actions - legitimate reasons to root against them. One is a fellow AFC North quarterback, whose name is neither Lamar nor Joe. Yet, I’ve seen more personal criticism thrown at Russ over the past two seasons than just about any other player in the league. Why? Because he struggled to move the ball in Denver? It’s pathetic behavior from real adults.

Mike Tomlin is a smart dude, and he all but named Wilson the starter back in the spring for a reason. He understood that having a kid as gifted and popular as Fields in the rearview mirror would be a great motivating factor for Russ. Now Pittsburgh finds itself in a win-win spot. Either Wilson returns to his Seattle form, or Fields takes the reins with the whole city - and a much better offensive line and defense than he ever had in Chicago - supporting him. I can’t stand the Steelers, but it sure sounds like a fun year is on the way.
