My Week 5 college football predictions.
Welcome to Glass Slipper! The Knicks are cold-hearted; please enjoy the show.
- Jacob Rhee
Each Saturday morning of the college football regular season, I will be predicting the outcome of the six best games of the weekend. Every time I pick the wrong team to win, it costs me $15. At the end of the year, I will use the total pot of money to buy gifts for random Glass Slipper subscribers. That’s right; you literally benefit from my failures. Let’s go.
Game 1: No. 20 Oklahoma State vs No. 23 Kansas State
The pick: Kansas State wins, 30-26.
It’s pretty stupid that one of these teams has a chance to be ranked inside the top 15 tomorrow. The Cowboys just got tossed around physically by Utah at home, and they should be docked extra points for losing to someone related to Zach Wilson. At no point has Oklahoma State looked like any sort of threat.
Speaking of our old friend Zachary, the Wildcats strolled into his old stomping grounds in Provo and got laughed off the field a week ago. I’ll take the better-coached group to pull this one out today, but I don’t feel great about it.
Game 2: No. 15 Louisville vs No. 16 Notre Dame
The pick: Notre Dame wins, 27-14.
Tyler Shough is one big performance away from bursting into the Heisman race and creating some real NFL buzz for himself. A 6-foot-5, 225-pound former four-star with solid arm talent and athleticism? Who knows how high that draft stock could go? I can hear the Justin Herbert comparisons already.
I’ve been watching Shough play for quite some time, however, and I’m sorry to report that he’s nothing special. Plus, people have forgotten that this Irish defense is elite; the embarrassing Northern Illinois loss happened because of the issues on the other side of the ball. Ja’Corey Brooks is awesome, but Benjamin Morrison is better. I’ll take Notre Dame to win comfortably.
Game 3: No. 2 Georgia vs No. 4 Alabama
The pick: Alabama wins, 28-24.
It doesn’t matter how much college football you watch. No one has any idea what’s going to happen tonight. The Dawgs have more continuity, and they’re probably a little bit better than the Tide. But Alabama is Alabama, and this thing is in Bryant-Denny.
I’ll bank on some Jalen Milroe wizardry, but it honestly feels kind of wrong even picking the game as a neutral observer. Matchups like this are rare; we should sit back and enjoy it.
Game 4: No. 19 Illinois vs No. 9 Penn State
The pick: Penn State wins, 20-16.
Illinois hasn’t been truly dangerous since the Juice Williams and Rashard Mendenhall squad that stunned No. 1 Ohio State in the ‘Shoe in 2007. The Chase Brown campaign was fun, but we all knew that the Illini would eventually fade.
Here we are. A chance for a season-defining, program-changing victory, that would vault Illinois into the playoff conversation. I really hope it happens, but I have Penn State grinding it out late.
Game 5: Washington State vs No. 25 Boise State
The pick: Boise State wins, 31-22.
A bizarre but undefeated Cougars team taking on a ranked future conference foe on the Smurf Turf? I hope you don’t have any plans this evening.
The college football world needs these Broncos in the CFP, just to keep watching Ashton Jeanty run. That kid will have at least five 1,000-yard seasons in the NFL, and he’s going hand-deliver Washington State its first defeat in about 11 hours.
Game 6: Arizona vs No. 10 Utah
The pick: Utah wins, 27-21.
This is dangerous territory for the Utes, even if Cam Rising does indeed make his return. I had this penciled in as an Arizona upset before the year, and only flipped my pick after the Wildcats defense looked alarmingly weak against Kansas State. Still, Noah Fifita possesses enough magic to score with anyone in this conference.
I’ll place my trust in the nation’s best coach to get the job done, though. The atmosphere in Salt Lake City is awesome, and those fans will be out in full force tonight.
Week 4 Results: 4-2
Overall Season Picks Record: 19-5
Current CFB Prize Pot: $75
