A recap of Week 5 in college football.
Welcome to Glass Slipper! The Reds and the Dodgers, in a playoff series. Nothing feels real; please enjoy the show.
- Jacob Rhee
Here are my 10 biggest takeaways from Week 5 of the college football season.
A Florida State face-plant.
We just watched the No. 8 team in America gain over 500 yards of total offense, intercept three passes, and still fall to squad that went 5-7 last year. Bizarre things happen on Friday night.
I don’t think many of us truly believed that the Seminoles belonged in the elite realm. Still, to suffer a season-altering loss in an obvious trap situation is extremely disappointing. Mike Norvell has to be better.
Brick by brick.
I absolutely love what I’m seeing from CJ Carr. His calmness in the pocket is really special, and he throws a gorgeous ball. I offered a CJ Stroud comparison this summer; that feels even more accurate to me now.
Some key statistics for Notre Dame QB CJ Carr and where they rank nationally through Week 5...
QBR: 88.4 (2)
Yards/attempt: 10.5 (5)
Passer rating: 181.1 (10)
Yards/game: 272.8 (20)
Comp. %: 68.3 (T29)Four games isn't insignificant. Carr is one of the best QBs in the country.

Even if it ends up being a reload year in South Bend, Carr’s weekly leaps are extremely encouraging. I can count on one hand the number of current college signal-callers that were this polished after four starts.
Walk this way.
I don’t want to hear another arrogant statement exit Lane Kiffin’s trap ever again if Ole Miss finds a way to miss the playoff. You’re fourth in the AP poll. The quarterback competition has been settled. Two ranked opponents remain on the schedule. It’s on a silver platter, man.
What an incredible twist in the life story of Trinidad Chambliss, by the way. He undoubtedly came to Oxford expecting to finish his playing career as a backup. Keep this rolling through 2026, and the kid is going to get legitimate Day 2 draft consideration.
One more time.
The Drew Allar saga continues. You’d assume that a former five-star with 70 total touchdowns and only 12 interceptions on the résumé would be the target of tanking NFL franchises. Allar is not. He’s just been unbelievably disappointing on big stages. Nine clashes with top-10 teams. Under 192 passing yards in eight of them. The occasion where Drew did manage to reach that benchmark? It was the Big Ten title game in December, where he tossed a pair of picks and lost.
Penn State will be included in the bracket. I wish I felt a little more confident in the dude leading the huddle.
Silent Library.
I’ll say what we were all thinking. The White Out was weak. Like, weirdly so. Dante Moore never once looked flustered.
I don’t know if there’s a HC who has done a better job preparing for the White Out, having his team completely unfazed, as Dan Lanning has this week. That dude wanted this scene.

Perhaps that inability to conquer great programs is taking a toll on the student body’s energy level? I have no idea. That was not the overwhelming wall of noise that famously engulfed Michigan in 2019, though.
Peachy keen.
If I criticize an individual, I must also hand out flowers when they shine. Kalen DeBoer deserves a bouquet.
Under immense pressure, he crafted a beautiful offensive plan. That Kadyn Proctor bubble screen definitely put a toothy grin on my face.
Not the same.
On the other side, Georgia’s defense was a mess again. The Dawgs are incredibly undisciplined with their eyes, and they also have tackling issues.
It took until November 20th for the 2021 iteration of UGA to allow its 78th point. This unit got there in seven halves. Yikes, Glenn Schumann.
Bear Bachmeier is fascinating.
Any QB wearing No. 47 has my attention, let alone an Asian one named after a wild animal.
Bear Bachmeier rocking No. 47 as a QB is objectively unhinged. But as a "let football players wear whatever number they want" maximalist, this is the price I'm willing to pay for free will.

Let’s keep tabs on him. I don’t think BYU is CFP-bound, but Bachmeier is awfully impressive for a true freshman. 10 total touchdowns, zero turnovers? The Cougars are set up for years of Big 12 contention.
My current Heisman ladder.
1) Dante Moore, Oregon QB
2) Ahmad Hardy, Missouri RB
3) Fernando Mendoza, Indiana QB
4) Rueben Bain Jr., Miami (FL) EDGE
5) Justice Haynes, Michigan RB
6) Haynes King, Georgia Tech QB
7) Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech LB
8) Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt QB
9) Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State WR
10) John Henry Daley, Utah EDGE
Time to peek ahead.
We’ve got undefeated Vanderbilt traveling to Tuscaloosa, and Miami attempting to pour salt in Florida State’s wound. A whole lot of bad blood is on deck.

We’re just not very good.
