Tough Luck

A recap of Week 2 in college football.

Welcome to Glass Slipper! Joe Burrow is simply incapable of playing to a respectable level in a season opener; please enjoy the show.

**NOTICE: Glass Slipper is shifting from seven days a week to five; there will be no newsletter on Wednesdays or Fridays from this point forward. Little Jakey needs to keep his nose in the textbooks during the school year. Don’t worry, I’ll still be bringing you the same elite-level content! I appreciate all of you very much.

Here are my 10 biggest takeaways from Week 2 of the college football season.

  1. Michigan officially does not have a quarterback.

A month ago, I dedicated an entire newsletter towards figuring out Michigan’s best option at QB. I didn’t mention Davis Warren’s name a single time; it seemed impossible that Sherrone Moore would give this kid the keys. I still think it’ll be another guy at the helm when the Wolverines come to Columbus in November. But it’s rather alarming that those other options couldn’t beat Warren out in the summer. This can’t be the answer.

  1. Texas came back better.

Regardless of the circumstances, the Big House is always a difficult place to play. That was incredibly impressive from the Longhorns. I said last week that there was a big gap after Georgia right now.

Maybe there isn’t.

  1. Who is Penn State?

The Nittany Lions were fantastic in their Week 1 win over West Virginia, with Trey Wallace seemingly staking his claim as DaeSean Hamilton 2.0. They were down at the half against Bowling Green on Saturday; Trey did not catch a single ball, and he made no effort to break up a Drew Allar interception in the end zone.

I’m inclined to give Penn State somewhat of a pass, but giving up 27 to a MAC team at home certainly isn’t a great look.

  1. Kyle McCord is… good?

Of course he decides to play well now. If only, if only. Kyle McCord spent 2023 at Ohio State, looking like he belonged at Syracuse. Now he’s at Syracuse, looking like he belongs at Ohio State.

McCord has completed 69.4% of his passes, for 735 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 1 interception. If the Orange beat Stanford in their next contest, they might very well pop up at the back of the AP poll that Sunday.

  1. Let’s talk about Marcus Freeman.

I carved up Freeman’s numbers as a head coach to make him look awesome a week ago. It’s only fair that I do the same thing the other way now. Marcus has lost to four unranked teams in his last 27 games. Four. Four losses of any kind is a lot for a national power in that time frame. I liked that he took ownership in his press conference, but this trend of Notre Dame playing both up and down to its competition is bizarre. Freeman does not seem like the kind of guy that would take any opponent lightly, yet his squads consistently do exactly that.

  1. Humiliation in Jordan-Hare.

You can’t lose to Cal at home and be taken seriously as a program. You just can’t. Also, how in the world is it possible that Auburn has gone 14 years without a great quarterback? After the pure swagger of the Cam Newton era, you’d think that talented QBs would be flocking to play here. That has not been the case whatsoever.

  1. Tennessee is real.

Look out. That’s all I’m saying. I included the Vols in my list of true title contenders for a reason. This is better than the Hendon Hooker squad that beat Alabama.

  1. Apologies to Dylan Raiola.

He’s really good already. The fact that Raiola played for four different high schools was pretty weird, but I respect the kid for spurning Ohio State and Georgia because he wanted to help rebuild things at Nebraska. The delivery is so smooth, and the arm talent is wild. It’ll be tough for the top teams in the Big Ten to put the Huskers away for the next few seasons.

  1. Ashton Jeanty.

Heisman front-runner.

No discussion.

  1. Time to peek ahead.

Arizona goes to Kansas State on Friday night, in a top-20 Big 12 matchup. Alabama better be careful; Camp Randall is one of the most underrated atmospheres in the sport. Meanwhile, Missouri has quietly climbed all the way to No. 6 in the country. The Tigers will get their first test with a road clash against a ranked Boston College team.

And, oh yeah. Kentucky - who just got thumped by South Carolina at home - is going to take down No. 1 Georgia. I’m not altering my take one bit.
