A recap of Week 1 in college football.

Welcome to Glass Slipper! Someone stop the Cubs right now; please enjoy the show.

- Jacob Rhee

Here are my 10 biggest takeaways from Week 1 of the college football season.

  1. The Colorado boys.

Colorado was not impressive on Thursday night. But, man. The two superstars were. I saw some people labeling Travis Hunter as the Shohei Ohtani of football, and it’s not the worst comparison I’ve ever heard. If Shohei was only a hitter - like he is this year - he’s still arguably the best player in the world. If he was only a pitcher, he’d be a perennial fringe All-Star. We’ve seen college football guys compete on both sides of the ball before; Champ Bailey and Chris Gamble were both awesome, and I remember linebackers Myles Jack and Shaq Thompson tiptoeing into the running back room. But no one has done it this well.

What about Shedeur Sanders? I’ve never been able to make up my mind about this dude as a prospect, but I think he’s starting to convince me. I want to see him do it against an elite defense, but the raw talent is undeniable. His feel and downfield ball placement are really special.

  1. Cade Klubnik did not get better.

You guys watched the game; I don’t really need to explain much more. Klubnik is still missing gimmes, rolling right for no apparent reason, and making questionable decisions. It’s honestly just disappointing stuff from a former five-star.

  1. There’s a gap after Georgia.

If Georgia and Ohio State had played on a neutral field on Saturday, I think the Dawgs would’ve won by 17. That will change throughout the course of the season, but it’s not close at the moment.

  1. Andy Kotelnicki is the truth.

It had been a long time since I smiled watching Penn State’s offense. We’ll see if whether this new-look attack is elite or gimmicky when the Nittany Lions battle with the big boys, but I salute Kotelnicki for bringing creativity and aggressiveness to Happy Valley. Who would’ve guessed that fun things are possible when a quarterback with a cannon lets it rip?

  1. Jeremiah Smith!

I know it was Akron, but there’s not a receiver in the country that I’d want over Jeremiah Smith for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.

Not Luther Burden III. Not Tetairoa McMillan, who just had 10 catches for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns. Not even Emeka Egbuka. Us Ohio State are very lucky that we get to watch Jeremiah for three years.

  1. Good vibes in Miami.

The ‘Canes should be 7-0 when they host No. 10 Florida State on October 26. If that’s the case, it’ll be the craziest crowd in Coral Gables in recent memory. With how awful Mike Norvell’s team looked in Week 0, an undefeated regular season is not completely out of the question for Miami. I’m serious.

  1. Marcus Freeman is top 10 in America.

In his last 21 games, Freeman is 17-4 with 7(!!) ranked wins. He had a rough start as Notre Dame’s head coach, but the guy has the Irish tuned up for big stages now. Fans of the program should be extremely excited; their team didn’t even play that well, and still got a win in a tough road environment.

  1. Everyone is good at QB.

Since the NFL Draft moved to seven rounds in 1994, the record for the most quarterbacks selected in one year is 17. That mark is falling within the next two years. There seems to be a pro QB playing on every channel, and they’re popping up out of nowhere now. Garrett Nussmeier will probably get an NFL chance somewhere. 5-foot-10 Noah Fifita is going to post numbers that scouts can’t ignore. Fifth-round pick Sean Clifford never once looked as sharp as Miller Moss did on that game-winning drive last night. You don’t think he’ll get drafted, too?

  1. Nico Fever is in full swing.

In two career starts, Nico Iamaleava is 34-47 for 465 yards and 7 total touchdowns. Zero turnovers, two blowout victories.

That is all.

  1. Time to peek ahead.

Those Seminoles that I mentioned earlier? They better not lose at home to Boston College tonight. Like, they better not. After all the complaining - which was justified - that this program did after Selection Sunday 2023, to start the next season 0-2 against ACC lightweights would be absolutely humiliating.

As for next week, we have No. 4 Texas headed to the Big House. The Cy-Hawk Trophy is up for grabs, and Tennessee faces No. 24 NC State. Clemson will try to fend off the ultimate embarrassment against Appalachian State, and the Ashton Jeanty Heisman train rolls into Eugene. I’m excited already.

I’d take him.
